If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take:
- One option is to take Colton Ave northeast into San Bernardino, over the overpass, continuing on Inland Center Dr. Turn left onto E St, then turn right onto Rialto Ave, left onto D St, and after you pass the intersection with 2nd St, turn into the parking lot on your left, and we’re there at 234 N D St.
- If the freeway’s not too bad, you could take Colton Ave and then turn left to get on I-215. Exit right onto 2nd St. Turn left onto D St, and our parking lot is the first one on the left from there.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Colton’s roots stretch back centuries to the time when the Tongva, Serrano, and Cahuilla peoples inhabited the region. The Tongva village of Homhoangna was located near what is now Reche Canyon, once called Homhoa Canyon, named after the Tongva word for “hilly place.” Spanish settlement began in the early 1800s with the establishment of Politana by Mission San Gabriel. By the mid-19th century, Colton was part of the Jurupa and San Bernardino Ranchos. The southwest region, known as Agua Mansa or “Gentle Waters,” was settled by New Mexican pioneers in 1842, while present-day Cooley Ranch was long known as Indian Knolls, a refuge during the great flood of 1862.
American settlers arrived soon after, with George Cooley purchasing land in 1854 along the Santa Ana River. Colton was officially founded in 1875 when the Southern Pacific Railway extended through the area and was named after David Douty Colton, a vice president of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The town became a transportation hub and the site of a rivalry between major rail companies at the historic Colton Crossing. Notably, Virgil Earp, brother of Wyatt Earp, served as Colton’s first marshal and lived in the city during the 1880s.
In the 1950s, Colton underwent major redevelopment when parts of its historic downtown were removed to make way for the Ramona Freeway — now the San Bernardino Freeway. Today, Colton remains a city rich in history, shaped by its Indigenous heritage, pioneering settlers, and railroad legacy.
